In its purest forms, theatre is an entertainment meant to distract, the best stage performances are rife with escapism, plain and simple. You surrender yourself to a person on stage who’s going to transport you out of your mundane, dreary life, and into a world less known; namely, the world of the performer’s hopefully interesting, unusual, dark, or in some cases, hilariously funny life story. Considering all the darkness in the world today, I needed some escapist silliness to distract me just for the night, so I took a chance at The Hollywood Fringe with Oops! Olivia Raine Atwood’s latest solo comedy about the ups and downs and pitfalls that go with being a professional matchmaker in Los Angeles. I hit the jackpot.

No matter what the world seems to hand certain people along the way, there are those that can take it all in stride and make magic with it. Olivia Raine Atwood is hilarious, sharp as a tack and she fills her hour-long show with enough laughs, throwbacks, and infectious energy to fuel a small city.

Olivia, aka Nook McCrook and Shat Girl (IYKYK) wasted no time engaging her audience with not-so-savory tales about running across the Williamsburg Bridge (a piece of real estate which I’m quite familiar with, living in Brooklyn for 20 years), and her extremely extensive boyfriend rating system, the likes of which managed to catapult her into the world of matchmaker – as career. Through comic monologues and character work, we meet several of her prospective gentlemen on Zoom calls, as her gift for giving keeps on giving and giving. The fact that she’s actually good at pairing people (even the dreaded Annemarie) is part of the fun. Atwood's star is on the rise, she's a romantic at heart with oodles of stories that one needs to experience, so I will spare any more spoilers.

Oops! was exactly what I needed to escape for an hour, and if you’re a sucker for hilarious, comedy and character work, you’re going to want to check this show out. Look for a possible encore at The Broadwater Theatre and be sure to keep an eye out for her work in the future. Her sister solo show Faking It is running throughout the USA and Olivia is taking her talents and both comic vehicles to The Edinburgh Fringe this year.
